Forgive me, but as I say, it is something that has worried me for some time† is all surface and lacks the deeper meaning that he simply cannot bring him to explicitly state. The terminology is directed toward the reasoning behind Miss Kenton having temporarily left her husband on a number of occasions. Tragic implication can be found in the fact that even at this late stage of his life when he has been so terribly disappointed, Mr. Stevens cannot help but retain his proper and studied sense of reserve. What he is really asking here is not whether her husband has mistreated her, but whether her husband has given her adequate reason to leave him permanently and come go to the man who has loved her so deeply and so longingly from afar. The discipline continues with his reply upon learning that her husband has not, in fact, been particularly ill-treating toward her. His reply that this knowledge â€Å"does take a load from my mind† is betrayed by emotions so raw and close to the surface that all his training and commitment to emotional distance cannot keep them entirely hidden. In that instant, Miss Kenton detects a note of humanity within Stevens despite his best efforts to suppress it. Her inquiry requires a follow-up that cannot be ignored. The question â€Å"Do you not believe me?† is one that his well-constructed sense of dignity could never possibly have allowed to go unanswered. Within that question lies an aspect of suspicion of his motives and a distrust that he has been entirely truthful. A man who has committed a lifetime to engendering trust and remaining truthful to this position to the point of that position obliterating every other aspect of his personality has no choice but to respond. So he does respond, but in a way that has to be excruciating to most readers, his response retains his sense of decorum at the very moment when his emotional state of being most requires that decorum be damned. Instead of opening up and delivering the full truth of how he feels, he couches those feelings behind a syntactical wasteland of confession to m erely being â€Å"rather mystified as to the cause of [her] unhappiness.† And yet, Miss Kenton, fully in touch with her own emotional state and doubtlessly aware to some extent of his, still manages to give him one more chance. After admitting that her marriage is hardly borne of uncontrollable desire and passion, but is one based more on mutual trust and comfort, she admits â€Å"I’ve grown to love him.† Then she remains silent. She give him that moment of silence to break free from the suppression of all his desires. She allows him just that one moment of silence upon those hardly inspiring words of devotion to her husband to let Mr. Stevens do something for once in his life that won’t push him toward dying from that life of quiet desperation. His failure to seize the day seals his doom. If only all those repressed emotions and if only a lifetime of dedication to being something rather than someone had so gripped him within a shroud of fear and an inability to act, Mr. Stevens might well not have ended up the modern tragic hero he becomes. Instead of speaking up, he lets that moment of silence lapse for long enough that Miss Kenton fills the void. She even comes close to making the full confession herself when she muses that she has thought about what a terrible mistake she’s made with her life. She doesn’t come right out and admit that, however, and her confession ends up being only the most dreaded words in the vocabulary for Mr. Stevens: â€Å"There’s no turning back the clock now.† Mr. Stevens does make a full confession. Not to Miss Kenton, to whom he should have made it, of course, but to the reader. At the words â€Å"my heart was breaking† he makes the transformation fully into modern tragic hero. He has sacrificed all for duty and that duty sacrificed nothing for him. He becomes situated as the person who gives everything to his ambitions without gaining anything from having those ambitions realized. The perfect butler, Mr. Stevens ends up weeping in his only genuine show of emotion as he becomes the most imperfect of humans: the human who does allow himself to experience the full gamut of the emotions extended only his species among all the species populating the planet.

Those who are gifted with education and ingenuity devote all their time and energy to duties appropriate to such powers. They thus confer on others the advantage of their own gifts, and are themselves spared from drudgery and uncongenial labor. The poorest in qualifications, also, find a place in which they can produce within the great partnership of society. Women are enabled to undertake business of the most delicate and important character, to which their strength is sufficient; while children of all ages take parts that would otherwise occupy men. The power saved or gained, by such an adaptation of talents to special branches of industry, is incalculable. Without it, a great part of the human race would be helpless paupers, and the remainder would earn a scanty and miserable livelihood. I was sitting in the living room and then a hot milky scent wafting from the kitchen hit me. I remember thinking that there was nothing better than a hot drink for this cold weather. I was very excited and headed straight for the kitchen. Hands holding on the edge of the doorway, peeping my head into the room, I saw my host mother making a hot beverage, and she offered me some. At first, I only tried a little bit, but then I had another sip, another one, and another one, until everything was gone. At that moment, I realized how much I liked the drink and that I would definitely need it to survive the upcoming winter days. I later found out that it was a Mexican drink called Atole. Since I was only able to enjoy the drink if someone made it for me, I decided to learn how to make it myself, which turned out to be relatively easy. There are two main stages to make this drink; th ey are buying the ingredients and then combining them to make the beverage. Before going into the instructions, it might beneficial to learn some background information about Atole. Atole is a traditional Mexican drink originating from pre-Columbian time and usually served at Dias de los muertos celebrations, which is translated as â€Å"Day of the Dead†. In Mexico, the hot thickened drink is typically made with cornmeal, water, raw sugar cane, cinnamon, and vanilla. After gathering all the materials and ingredients, all I had to do was to follow the recipe and the drink would be ready in less than half an hour. First, I put five cups of milk into a saucepan or a stockpot. After, I put the saucepan of milk on the stove on medium-high heat until the milk started to boil, which often took ten minutes. Third, while waiting for the milk to boil, I put one cup of milk into a glass or a mug and poured the entire Atole package into the container and stirred the mixture. Next, when the milk started to boil, I turned down the fire to low heat, poured the mixture into the saucepan and stirred it for one minute. Soon, I stirred about five to eight table spoons of sugar into the drink. Finally, I turned off the stove and poured out the drink into a mug and it was ready to serve. I suggest enjoying the drink with a spoon to make it easier to drink when it is still hot and delicious. How important is the food that the averages person puts into their bodies every day? Eating is a way of making peace, passing the time, sharing friendships, and having a communion. The narrator of Food Inc points out that, â€Å"The way we eat has changed more in the last 50 years than in the previous 10,000† (2008). How has it changed? Americans have gone from eating hunter-gatherer style organic greens and fruits, to severely processed sugars, carbohydrates, and high protein meats. Most Americans eat something similar to a â€Å"chicken and pasta† diet nowadays. This may not be bad, but is this â€Å"new† food really better for us than what people ate 50 and 100 years ago? Organic foods are substances that are produced using ways that do not involve modern unneeded synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Organic foods are also not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents, or chemical food additives (dictionary). Convenience food, or tertiary processed food, is commercially prepared food designed for ease of buying and consuming. Products designated as â€Å"convenience or processed foods† are often prepared so they can be sold as hot, ready-to-serve plates; as room-temperature, long lasting shelf life products; or as refrigerated or frozen products that require minimal preparation (usually just microwaving). There are studies that show that the food people consume on a daily basis Taylor 2 can influence them for years to come, and can impact the longevity of lives through weight fluctuation, energy, and healing powers. The most common ads on TV nowadays are weight loss commercials. The average American is overweight, sluggish, and unhealthy. More than one-third of U. S. adults (35. 7%) are obese (Ogden). How does food control our weight? Does processed food cause weight gain more than organic would? Processed and packaged food is filled with unnatural dyes, toxins, and genetically modified ingredients that our bodies don’t know how to react to. These artificial chemicals give the food flavor, color, and a long shelf life, but they also build up in the body and cause the nutritional system to be confused, blocked, and set into fat-storing mode (Davis, William). Consuming fresh vegetables, fruits, and other items grown naturally without any preservatives is what the body naturally expects. It’s easy for that sustenance to be converted to energy because that’s what one’s body expects. An organic diet usually results in a trimmer and more energetic body and mind set. Eating organic is not always helpful to one’s budget; the supply of organic food is more limited than the demand. Handling the food results in higher costs because of the mandatory separation of organic and conventional products, and selling and dispersing the organic food throughout the country can also result in higher costs because it’s rather inefficient and the volumes are smaller (FAO: Food and Agriculture Organization). Fast food may appear to be cheap food and, in the literal sense it often is, but that is because huge social and environmental costs are being excluded from the calculations. The wrong foods have been known to cause diseases, but the right ones have also been known to prevent them, or rid the body of harmful toxins causing the illness. â€Å"Although human bodies are incredibly adaptable and may maintain themselves for a long time when nutrition is improper or lacking, ideal health is dependent on optimum nutrition. † (Allman, 9). â€Å"In 1972, the FDA conducted approximately 50,000 food safety inspections. In 2006, the FDA conducted 9,164† (Food, Inc). Not all food is safe for the body to digest. This quote is not saying that all processed food is bad for the body, and that all organic food is perfect, it’s saying that most food people eat isn’t as clean as it used to be which is much like â€Å"going backwards† from all the progress America has made with food codes and regulations. The question throughout all of this still stands, â€Å"Can the food one eats truly help them live longer? † One of the oldest people alive, Walter Breuning, had an interview about his diet recently. All his life he’s said that most people eat â€Å"just too darn much† (Sanders). Breuning hasn’t eaten supper for the past 35 years. He eats lots of fruit, lots of vegetables, and drinks a Taylor 4 large amount of water. He says that’s the way he likes it, and there’s no denying that it’s helped him go far beyond the average lifespan of an adult male. Whether one considers their weight, lifespan, budget, or general health next time they go out to the grocery store, or consume something to eat, it’s always good to consider something. Mindless eating doesn’t benefit anyone. Do people â€Å"eat to live,† or do they â€Å"live to eat? † Food can affect our weight, lifespan, energy, and health.
